The Big 56, Happy Birthday Mom

This entry is dedicated to the woman who taught me to believe in my wildest of dreams. Although, she probably thought that one day I’d clerk for a Supreme Justice, she always pushed me to go farther than I could ever envision. She’s the dreamer who taught me that dreams are reachable. I’m eternally grateful to be able to celebrate my mother’s 56th birthday. She is officially a year older than her mother was when her mother passed away to cervical cancer. I never met my grandmother, but I hear she was one heck of a heroine. I’m so blessed to be able to enjoy my mother in her 56th year of life. More so, because she’s always wondered what her mother’s 56th year of life would’ve been like if they had diagnosed her sooner. That’s why her 56 means so much to me.

In my short twenty-something years, I’ve known her; she’s failed, made mistakes, made hasty decisions but always had the courage to face the repercussions. She’s the bravest woman I know with a heart that gives unconditionally. You see, I wouldn’t ever trust my mother with a million dollars. Reason being, that she’d spent it all in less than a day. She’d spent it by giving it to people with no homes, to people with no legal status to obtain legal counsel, to our church to finish up constructing the church we grew up in, and to single mothers everywhere. Her heart is as big as Jupiter and her compassion for humanity is even greater. I had always imagined the humble beginnings my mom came from but it became more vivid when I studied abroad in Central America a few years ago. Seeing where she came from to where she is today is a story waiting to be written (and trust it me, it’s in the works).

Happy birthday mom, your vigor for life, people and God can’t ever be replicated, but I’ll try my hardest to make you proud.
