They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. And this one above is exactly that, but I’d challenge that cliche proverb and say this one is worth 30 years in the making. 30 years of hustle, work, search, perseverance and unanswered prayers, questions, worries, and anxiety. By now, you may know that dad, my dad, is a pastor. He’s been a pastor ever since I can remember and he’s the reason why you’ll hear us talking about legacy, serving with love and family.

To make a long story short, after decades of searching to purchase a building for the church he pastors and for the community, he finally got approval by the city of San Rafael to turn 40 Golden Gate Ave, San Rafael into an official law-abiding church. I remember being just 7 years old and waiting for him in his truck watching him to inspect buildings only to receive a ‘no’ from the City. Although we might’ve thought that the ‘yes’ from the City was the victory, it was the start of another decade of construction, demolition, renovations and permit applications. It took a lot of sacrifices, pupusa fund-raising; events to be able to finally inaugurate the building as a church.

On March 31st, my dad and I cut the red ribbon to finally enter our church of his dreams. I felt so privileged and somewhat awkward as I held the scissors next to his knowing how surreal the moment was. We had hundreds, close to a thousand, of community visitors, members and family witnessing this 30-year-awaited moment. I can’t post his entire story in 400 words or less, but I can say that I’ve never been more proud, honored, nostalgic and joyful. To watch my dad take this moment in and to see him shed a tear shifted something in me. I realize that if he, along with a team of believers, can convert an old cookie factory into a church, a center to help the community that gives me enough hope to do something incredible with my own life and mission.
