Why I Chose to be a Photographer

I love to plan things. It gives me a sense of control. I love re-watching movies and shows because I thrill on the experience of knowing what happens next. From the very get-go, I planned my academic career with law school as the end-goal. My ambition was to go to D. C.  and influence immigration reform. I’m not quite a political type, but the reason this grew so heavy in my heart, was because of the community I grew up in, my parents and friends who struggled with these issues. I tried so hard in classes, but I always found myself doing better in my writing and photojournalism courses. I dreaded the poli-sci classes and frankly always found that my graphic novelesque notes were my favorite parts.

I had some scholarship money that I saved and bought my first DSLR camera. I didn’t have any specific purpose, but to document my everyday life and any unique moments that came along my way. I always knew that I had some sort of artistic flair, but I never felt that I had permission to embrace it. After my paralegal stint, I thought, why not? Why not try at least? I don’t want to one day be in my 40’s and then think, what if? I noticed that I gained so much weight and had very little time in the day between commuting and working to exercise. I was not enjoying how I spend my days working and counting down to 4:59 pm on Fridays. So after friends and family asking for photo sessions and photographing travels, I realized that I’m happiest when I’m interacting with people and getting to be in a beautiful scenery. Sometimes, Victor and I ‘pretend’ to be location scouting, but really we’re just delighting in the fresh air, gorgeous greenery, vines for days or the scent of the sea. It wasn’t until Victor and I planned our wedding that I realized how smitten I was with wedding photography. I kept pinning and reading the Green Wedding Shoes site even post-wedding. Victor encouraged me to go after it full throttle.

Seeing the captured moments all over again whether with a print, on a computer screen, my iPhone or other places, is a way of satiating my urge to re-live the experience again. I love that I get to be artistic. I love that I get to meet beautiful people. Sometimes, after a shoot, I feel like I made new friends. Victor and I had our business plan meeting for 2015 recently, and I’m excited, am a bit scared but anxious to see how things will unfold for the upcoming season.
