How I changed a bad day into a good day

some little roses from the spring...

some little roses from springtime in our garden…

It’s not even noon today as I write this and already I felt defeated and a bit gloomy. Some unexpected turn of events happened that might result in looking for new workspace or even studio space, and even search for a new place to call home. This feeling in my chest and 1000 thoughts per minute that might influence the workload I have today, will not. Yes, I feel setback and with little to no inspiration, but as the saying goes ‘the show must go on.’ Have you ever felt like you had to drag a huge load of stuff throughout the day, knowing you could do without or have things unravel in a very different way than expected? Oh, you know those days that just drag you completely by the feet with your hands grasping so tightly to the bed posts not wanting to let go the ignorant bliss of your warm bed? I’m more than sure that I’m not the only one, and today felt like it’s my turn. Although, funny enough, today I began a new devotional in the morning and it’s called The Power of Being Thankful by my homegirl Joyce Meyer.

I’m on day 1 but already feel like it prepared me to face this day. Because things are not going as planned, it’s so easy to remain in this wallowing pit of self-defeat and despair. I want to hide under the covers of my bed and be lost in lala land, but I choose not to be. I choose to voice on here that hope is not lost and I’m nowhere near the end. Just because the end of 2014 is panning out to look differently than the beginning doesn’t mean I can’t finish with a bang. 2015 is going to be a fully booked year with new friends, clients and family.

This is what I decided to do instead and something you could do whether you’re driving, picking up kids from school, at lunch time with your friends and even while you’re lifting weights (wait! maybe focus on breathing and your form while you’re lifting 😉 The point is that all it takes 1-2 minutes of uninterrupted and quiet time. Here it goes, say 20 things out loud you’re thankful for. Yes 20 things. It might be a little bit daunting and cheesy at the same time, but once I got over that hurdle I felt more invigorated almost at the edge of tears. It’s a soulful exercise of looking at the glass-full-type-of-thing. So, to exemplify this, I’ll write out mine.

1. I’m thankful because I get to work with my husband, my best friend.

2. I’m thankful for the best comfy bed a side-sleeper could ever ask for.

3. I’m thankful for being a self-employed business owner.

4. I’m thankful because everything that I do is for my future babies Selah Rose and Timothy.

5. I’m thankful for the many industry professionals I’ve been able to meet this year.

6. I’m thankful for the health of my first nephew in Guatemala.

7. I’m thankful for the health of my parents.

8. I’m thankful for living in one of the most scenic areas in California.

9. I’m thankful for the love and affection of my dear brothers. (Miss you Tito)

10. I’m thankful for my little brother going after his life-long dream of being a performer in L. A.

11. I’m thankful for my gear.

12. I’m thankful for my loving clients that I was able to work with these past year. Some I even get to call friends.

13. I’m thankful for being able to belong to a youth ministry who inspires me every time we get together.

14. I’m thankful for new strength especially for Tam Crossfit

15. I’m thankful for the best dad I could ever ask for, even though he’s cranky half the time.

16. I’m thankful for a very pushy mom who never rests and continues to work on herself.

17. I’m thankful for my house.

18. I’m thankful for laughter and tears.

19. I’m thankful because I get to talk daily to the Creator of the universe.

20. I’m thankful for process. It means I’m growing.

Those last few were tough to write without tears and slobber (I’m a crybaby, what can I say?). It truly does change your day. No matter how heavy things might seem, all the good outweighs the not-so-good.

What are you thankful for?
