How we plan for an Engagement Session

How do you choose that spot, the one spot to capture the first part of your wedding trajectory? Where will the pictures make the official announcement of your intended pledges to forever? How and when? Is it necessary? These are all but very common questions. I was absolutely torn when planning for my own engagement session. I almost thought we could do without, but when we were about 3-4 months before the big day, I collected the courage to plan one. The following crossed my mind, as it might cross yours…

Location and Fiance approval.
I had chosen my engagement session photographer, and we brainstorm the overall feel of our session in relation to my, ahem, I mean OUR wedding. My first mistake was not including Victor in this process. I decided to make the drive out long ways away from home to our location and didn’t take into account the traffic we would encounter. Victor was patient as he always is, but I can tell that I should have thought about all the last minute factors by making sure we were on the same page.

The Dress code.
Outfits were the 1st things I thought of. I wore one of my special dresses to infuse a little whimsicalness (not a real word, but you get what I’m saying 😉 I wanted to bring in a little bit of vintage allure and romance. We had one outfit, but I thought that maybe having a second could have given us a bit of variety.

Setting the scene.
Props. Those small details that help bring together the whole picture together (no pun intended). We had purchased a few finds at the Alameda Flea market (one of my favorite places on earth). We bought a picnic basket, a china tea set, flowers, and some old suitcases. These were all details that we incorporated into our wedding. It helped give a glimpse to our many (many) guests on our theme.

I also use this thing called Simon says and a mix of robotics to explain..It works every time 😉

Because of all these elements that could make an engagement session even more fun, we have prepared a comprehensive guide to engagement session planning for all of our couples that are on the ‘getting-married-boat.’ It explores everything from details, location, destination location, outfits, hair and makeup and things that might’ve skipped your mind. With the help of our photog mentors, there’s checklist, scheduling tid bits and a little insight to photographer-friendly lighting. The guide answers how to determine the best location, what to wear? When? What time of the day is best? And can we travel to Italy for our session?

I have to admit, my brides are some of the most creative gals. I get so giddy and impressed when I meet them for the session. So no more breaking your head on how to do this thing called an engagement session!

Should we have the pleasure and honor to photograph you, there is a little something on it’s way to you! If not feel free to contact us to get your own.
