A Shoot Above the Clouds with Maria + Javi

Mountain Tamalpais East Peak Engagement Session

As we enjoy the lovely Spring Equinox, we’ve been getting some mixed weather in the Bay Area anywhere from high 70’s to mid 40-degree temperature. Like any port area, the weather is temperamental. Knowing this, I carefully selected a handful of picture-worthy backdrops for Maria and Javi whose wedding is also fast approaching. As mentioned previously, I love scouting new locations. Even if I’ve shot in the same place beforehand, I love to look at a place with a pair of fresh new eyes. It keeps the creative juices flowing. I always try to scope the scene whether it’s a week or a day before the shoot, so I can generate a solid plan to follow. It allows me to have a better sense of control (which we know is an issue I’m getting better at).

On the day of the shoot, I noticed that dear old Karl, the fog, was rolling in sooner than expected. I knew that the only way I could beat it in the headlands was if we went higher above it, way higher.

We started in the tall Muir Woods, filled with lush greenery and the ancient Redwood trees. Maria was a little nervous, but it wasn’t long before the camera started loving her. With the sun setting, I felt I was competing with the last glimmers of light peeking through the tall branches, and I felt the cold mist rolling in. Maria and Javi were distracted by their own love affair taking place, which eased my mind. Their lax style allowed us to segue easily to the different areas. Thus, they took the news very lightly when I informed them the change of plans.

On the road to the East Peak of Mount Tamalpais, we sought out to conclude the shoot. The sun was beginning to hide lending the perfect pink backdrop for the picnic theme shot, and the clouds settled below us. They laughed as they sipped their divine tempting wine. Nothing was missing, everything was perfect, it’s as we if we planned the shoot like so. Her gaze and his charm were the perfect match to the ethereal setting.

I had never been to the “East” side before of Lady Mt. Tam, but I now have a new place to go out to envision and imagine. It’s senseless how sometimes; I grasp the rails so tight of a plan and control but sometimes the universe shifts you to something even better maybe even more wonderful.

I cannot wait for their gorgeous nuptials to take place in SoCal.
