Life had presented them the opportunity to meet, at a distance. Being on opposite sides of the country, Anabel tried to resist his virtual charm. Sal, had his eyes set on her and he didn’t give up trying to win her over. She knew he was somebody she wanted to stay in touch with, so they continued their conversation via all the ways you could in this day and age. The longer they spoke, the more they wrote, the more space she made in her heart for the possibility of a future together. Soon enough it felt as if the pair had been apart for the longest time but finally reunited. Sal made the trip back and forth to see her and Anabel fell more in love in that season of distance.

There was never a first meeting because the two of them were always meant to be. The more time they spent together and the memories they created in that first year only reassured Sal of his decision to propose. Knowing how meaningful Anabel’s family back in Mexico meant to her, he wanted to commemorate their upcoming trip together by putting on the most impressive proposal with a slight sinaloense flair. Even though he was feeling a little under the weather, he was determined to walk in with the mariachi to serenade Anabel that July evening. She was taken aback at his effort but then was even more surprised when her family members walked in with letter balloons that spelled out: “W-I-L-L-Y-O-U-M-A-R-R-Y-M-E-?” He then got on one knee took her hand slipped the ring on her finger while her other wiped the tears. Right there, in front of all of her loved ones, in Mexico, they got engaged.

When the time came to plan a session that would honor this season before marriage, they chose the beautiful and hidden Gray Whale Cove beach in Half Moon Bay. I always admired Anabel’s beautiful smile since we were in middle school together, so I already knew that she would be photogenic. Although, it was apparent that Sal brought out a different side to her. We were gifted an incredible sunset that evening. It crowned their session perfectly. They turned towards the ocean, taking in the myriad of different pinks envisioning maybe how each wave will bring them closer to more chapters ahead in life.
