I remember knowing even before Victor proposed what my colors were going to be for my special day. Before details, flowers arrangements and details can be decided, the preliminary unasked question is what are the wedding theme colors? I often ask my brides this question in preparation for their big day because it’s so important for me to be able to envision how their day will unfold visually. I often think of colors, details, and unique personality traits. All of these elements are translated in their day making a picturesque scene to photograph. Although, some people might stick to one color or two even, I’d like to suggest thinking in an assortment of colors. An assortment of colors you ask? Yes, a palette in other words.

Besides, photographing with me, Victor specializes in color selection for interior and architecture design. He deals with hundreds of contractors, property managers and homeowners every day trying to perfect color matches and mixing colors to create that unique shade only found in rainbows. Every time I walk in Tam Paints, besides waiting in line for my hubby, I gravitate to the color selection area. I like to look at the color palette samples that you can take home and pin it to your wall. I often pretend to pick a few and pretend that I’m redoing our workspace or bedroom at home. Sometimes you’ll find thousand gradients of colors that you never thought possible.

In determining your wedding theme colors…

1. Browse for colors. Choose all the colors that you gravitate to and would love to see around on your day. Don’t just choose a red because you like red. Think about what kind of red? Crimson, burgundy, cherry? Select all the colors that you can tolerate visually for endless amounts of time (or at least until you get to the altar). When I was choosing colors, one of Victor’s favorite color is gray, so we opted to have gray as a neutral base. My heart has always lusted after the pinks and violets frequently found in orchids. I knew that our accents would be berry colored tones and violets.

2. Pick 4-5 colors. From the assortment of palettes, you might’ve of collected, choose a family of 4-5 colors that are not only visually appealing but have some meaning between the two of you. You can gather the colors and tape them on a board of inspiration or lay them out on a table. Pinterest is also a good way to be able to gather all you picks in one place. I remember when I showed my mom the bridesmaids’ dresses we had chosen. She was silent for a second (which is rare) and later said to me that the color of the dress was my grandma’s favorite. I realized that although, it’s been long after she passed, to be able to include one her favorite colors in our wedding theme was a way for her to be present. Later, I noted, with the help of my beautiful florist, that the color was also included in all of the centerpieces. Almost as if, my grandmother was there helping in the planning process.

3. Make sure the colors make sense to you. Mix and match your selected colors. Find floral elements or other things that will help bring the colors to life and determine whether they are visually cohesive together. Sometimes using a color wheel can help and your best friend too. Once you’ve selected the colors, sometimes you can sneak more hues in there. Aside from my sweet grandmother’s color preferences, I always loved violets, purples, and blush tones. They all came together perfectly by keeping as much of the decor and stationary as neutral as possible. With the help of my friends and (planner besty), I was able to condense my color choices to a minimum otherwise I’d have a royal purple mess!

4. Think about the season your wedding date is going to take place. Usually, the season that is going to take place is one that will determine that availability of flowers. Let’s face it, is it really worth the extra expense to fly in peonies in the middle of October from Bolivia? This was certainly my dilemma when I found out that my favorite flowers weren’t going to be in season. Regardless I also I knew that Orchids and hydrangeas are very prominent in October, my colors would be doable. Although, gray was more a cool color for fall, silver charger plates were easily incorporated.

Even though this might appear to be an elaborative process for color choosing, remember that color schemes determine decor and details. Floral arrangements, bridesmaids’ dresses, groomsmen attire, centerpieces, invitations, sashes, boutonnieres, corsages, stationary marry together by the color of your choosing. By having a palette, you add dimension as oppose to having a monochromatic look (unless that’s your aim). Your picked-out-hues personalize wedding elements, tailoring your guests’ experience to a piece of the two of you.
