josh's shoot-9

Busy, busy, busy is how many of us can be describing our daily lives at the moment. I’m kind of feeling as if this daylight savings time end has us scurrying about trying to get done everything that needs to get done before the sunlight is officially hidden to the other side of the world. These last three months (traveling to New York, Maui, and everywhere in between) have been on a photographic rampage and I couldn’t be anymore blessed, but as I look forward to the 2015 year, I get bit scared and a little weary. I’m a huge control freak and letting go of things that don’t pan out my way is not my strong suit. It’s easy to run out of fuel and to feel like you can’t give any more of yourself. Alas, I decided not to waddle in this feeling. I am 100% decided to not get comfortable. Some words that keep popping up everywhere I go is the word ‘hustle’ and ‘process.’

I enrolled in a couple of photography classes these last couple of months simply to understand some new elements that I want to incorporate into my craft. Something that my mama always repeats to me is always to keep learning. She says that the only way you can get through in this life is to learn. Whether, in the classroom, a group setting, church, listening to audiobooks or even just talking with a friend over coffee, to learn is to understand something new. I feel that the learning process is also humbling. In order to receive something new, you must accept that you’re lacking something else.

In this busy season or time where you feel like you’re lacking inspiration, or you just can’t pull out anything else, look to something new. Accept that there’s something missing, something that can be improved upon and that there is more. I pride myself in shooting in natural settings and taking advantage of the luscious green we’re so blessed to have in the Bay Area. So when I decided to do this shoot in-studio, it was challenging. Challenging in the sense that it was different, and it was something new for my professional work. My little brother came up from L. A. and was gracious enough to trust me to photograph his head-shots for his portfolio as well for an EP album he has in the works. We referenced a little MJ and the fab queen Adele for inspiration.

I feel happy that I now have this in my tool belt and embraced this little uncomfortable part of the process. I wholeheartedly believe that if you challenge yourself, embrace something new and have accepted that there’s more out there– you will beat any rut you might be in. This is a constant struggle for me. I can’t say that I’m now fully recharged and 100% ready for whatever comes next, but at least my eye and heart is expectant for better and new blessings.
