They had met years ago in the youth ministry of St. Mary’s church. They were both in different parts of their life’s journey. It was December of 2011, and everything was unexpected. The location, the dress code and one of the first friends she made would one day be her husband. It was the Christmas event of the year, Alejandra showed up dressed casually whereas Luis showed up with a little class in a black tie. Her first evening at the youth ministry gathering was a gala event. She felt slightly embarrassed, but he assured her that no one would notice her sneakers. That was their beginning, and two years later of friendship and perfect attendance at the youth ministry meetings, he asked her to be his girlfriend, and she happily agreed. It wasn’t until two years after that they decided to tie the knot.

Their wedding day woke up gloriously and their charming home was full of the bridal hustle and at the same time a piece of a serene scene. He was in the middle of putting the last pieces of his suit, and she was lightly brushed by strokes of her makeup artist’s blush to blend with the rest of her details. There was a slight bit of nostalgia in the air. Her dad took a few deep breaths when he put her veil on. Her mother gave her a blessing before she headed out to marry Luis. Nothing could stop her from arriving at St. Mary’s Church, where it all started. Her 1920’s Bentley carried her away and amidst the traffic came in the nick of time. Luis waited patiently at the altar. His shoulders lowered slowly when she came in through the door. He smiled, and she smiled back grabbing on to her parents arms. This time she was dressed more than right for the occasion, and all of her guests took note.

The sunlight shined on them. The pink hues throughout the day found in many details matched her vision. Hydrangeas and white roses crowned each table and it was what she always pictured. They couldn’t believe the journey of a year of planning had resulted in the best-looking affair of their dreams. They drank the day in slowly. Their Mexican families came from far and wide. The love in the room couldn’t be contained. There were glasses cheering, chatter, Mariachi music and the laughter all over. Luis made a note of this and urged all of his married guests to embrace their partner. As Luis and Alejandra kissed after their toast, all of the couples in the room followed in their steps. He knew that he was a part of something much bigger by being at Alejandra’s side as her husband.
